ice luge accident
Friday February 12th, Nodar Kumaritashvili was practicing before his event which was ice lugging. He lost control at 90mph and flew off the track and crashed which killed him on impact. The video was being aired live and continued to play through out the day. This cause much controversy in the media. Some people feel that it is unethical for the video to be aired on TV because it shows such graphic material and could be disturbing to some people as well as disrespectful to the family. I can see this from both sides of the story. The video is graphic because it does show someone dieing and could be disturbing to others but at the same time death is natural occurring thing. The video doesn't show him being murder in a gruesome manner. If they are going to air it on TV there should at least have a warning before stating that it there is graphic material in the video.

I think they should keep the material up so they can see how crazy some people are. Sports have accidents all the time, and they should let people see how dangerous some sports can really be. And if you do participate in a sport, you should learn what not to do when in that situation. Even though this person had non control over what happend. So yeah i think they should have air this.
ReplyDeleteUgh sounds like another sad over-publisized news story. My condolences to the family
ReplyDeleteI see this issue from both sides. From the families point of view they see this as being disrespectful. However, it isn't like the vidoe was taken by a bystander who just happened to catch the accident on video. The video was professional recorded. This was a public event and was in the media already. My prayers go out to the family and friends!
ReplyDeleteThis was indeed a tragic event. Many people need to see this video. It is done in remembrance of Nodar and a warning to those who try to do the sport. Nodar was a professional athlete. He died at a young age. But he was amazing at what he did. Also, he did not die immediantly after the crash. Authorities say that he died in the hospital after the accident.
ReplyDeleteMy heart goes out to the family and friends of Nodar and his beloved country which he served at the Olympics fearlessly.
This was a tragedy, and while I understand that it took place at a media event I think it was cheap to show his death. I think showing the tape was was disrepectful and turned it into more of a tabloid situation.
ReplyDeleteout of respect for the family and Kumaritashvili they shouldn't have shown the footage of his death.

ReplyDeleteI didn't see the video, but I have heard so much about it. I did see a reporter talking to the father of the victim, and all you can hear in the background is "I don't want to see the footage; I want to remember my son the way he was."
ReplyDeleteNo parent wants to identify their child in a morgue, let alone see footage of them flying to their death.
The media can be so heartless sometimes, but I plan on changing that once I finish my degree.
I plan on connecting with my source and telling the truth about what is going on without added effects.
